PWS Awareness Day #5: History of PWS


Backing up a bit... although PWS was obviously in existence before, the syndrome was not characterized until 1956 by Andrea Prader, Henrich Willi, Alexis Labhart, Andrew Ziegler, and Guido Fanconi. Somehow, only Prader and Willi's names stuck. :) At the time PWS was identified, the life expectancy of people with PWS was very short. Today, if weight and other medical issues are controlled, the life expectancy is longer, I believe with some of the oldest people with PWS being in their 60s. There currently is no cure for PWS. More on that later....
