Personality - two brothers

Thank you for all of you who have been praying for my grandparents. My mom said my grandma is doing better today and seems to be heading in the right direction. We ask that you continue to pray for her strength and healing, and for comfort for my grandpa. How do you watch someone you have loved for more than a lifetime struggle so much? I can't imagine. They are awesome.

Dean is still trying to figure out the whole crawling deal (Mom's patience, enter stage right). He prefers to roll around the room because he's good at it and is FAST. He did a smidge of army crawling this morning and then was all set on doing any more for the day. :) I've thought often about kids' personalities and how that contributes to pace of development. Dean for the most part, is a VERY chill kid, and I think even if he didn't have very low muscle tone, he would have accomplished most milestones later than Cole did. Cole was born as a newborn who thought he was already a toddler and was screaming (literally) to get out of his own body. Naturally, he hit all his milestones early or on time.

It's a good reminder because it's easy to slip into thinking that everything about Dean is because of PWS. Not true! He still has a personality just like any other child, and that personality - while partially determined by him having PWS - would be there no matter what.

So, we find that he needs a little more encouragement than did his brother even to *attempt* certain things. He's just not interested in initiating these activities himself. A book that we have on gross motor skills in children with Down Syndrome describes two types of kids (probably generalizable to the population at large): those who are "motor driven" and those who are "observers." Cole is definitely in the former group, Dean in the latter group. Personality.

Papa got down on the floor with Dean this weekend to spur him on to crawl. It didn't work, but it sure was cute. :)

Dean knows that we're onto him. :)

While we're at it, here are more photos from the weekend. Cole helped Papa wash the car. He was more than happy to help with the hose and get wet in the process. Does this kid look like a man on a mission or what?

They complement each other perfectly. :) I can't imagine a better pair.

So true!! Graham is definitely an observer and I believe he would have hit his milestones later as well. That being said, he would flip through pages of a book at 8 months old, so he was way ahead on somethings not motor driven.

Adorable! You have such sweet boys. :) Glad your grandmother seems to be improving.

Your boys are so handsome. I hope my girls grow to be as close as your boys seem to be!
