Another Advancement in Research!

This is huge! The FDA has approved a new weight-loss drug, the first one in more than a decade. I know, there have been plenty of others that have come and gone, some safe and some not so much. Many of these wouldn't necessarily work with PWS because of a variety of reasons. This one, however, acts on a particular receptor that has been implicated in PWS through other research. Here's what Theresa Strong, Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research (FPWR), says:

"This drug might be very interesting for PWS because it acts on the serotonin 2C receptor. That receptor is modified by one of the 'snoRNAs' from the PWS region, and is thought to be somewhat disrupted in its function in PWS (there's a bit of controversy about the extent of disruption). It's been a long road to approval, and the drug is not without safety concerns, but it could be an option for those with PWS if it has an effect."

Very exciting! And once again highlighting the importance of research! Contribute to our One SMALL Step for Prader-Willi Syndrome walk in Richmond this October! Click HERE to donate!
